Mostly Silent and Unattended Install of Novell Client 2 from ZCM 11

This cool solution provides information on how to configure ZENworks Configuration Management bundles to deploy Novell Client 2 on Endpoint Management devices. This document details the procedure for ZENworks Configuration Management 11.

Note: The majority of this is a rewrite of a previous Cool Solution but updated for a silent install and the latest Novell Client 2 SP3 IR1a.

Overview:

Administrators might need to install the Novell Client 2 on all Endpoint Management devices in their organization. The ZENworks Configuration Management Bundles feature can be used to perform the installation of the Novell Client 2 on all Endpoint Management devices. ZENworks Configuration Management allows administrators to deploy the Novell Client 2 on devices in stages based on criteria, such as location, device category, and operating system.

System Requirements

Important: The Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows is only for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 on x86 or x64 platforms. This client will not run on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or earlier Windows platforms.

The Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows is supported on the following platforms:

  • Windows Server 2012 (x64)
  • Windows 8 (x86 or x64) excluding Windows 8 RT
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (x64)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64)
  • Windows 7 SP1 (x86 or x64)
  • Windows 7 (x86 or x64)
  • (Ultimate Edition, Enterprise Edition, or Professional Edition)

Downloading the Novell Client 2 SP3 IR1a Installation Files:

To download the Installation files, perform the following steps.

1 Installing Novell Client 2 on ZENworks 11

1.1 Configuring the Novell Client 2 Installation Bundle

To configure the Novell Client 2 Installation bundle, perform the following steps:

  • Login to ZENworks Control Center.
  • Create a new empty Windows Bundle.
    For more information about creating Windows bundles, see Creating Windows Bundles in the Novell ZENworks 11 Software Distribution Reference.
  • In the Actions tab, navigate to the Install section to add actions to the bundle.
    For more information about Windows Bundle Actions, see Actions in the Novell ZENworks 11 Software Distribution Reference.
  • Add a Create/Delete Directory action to the bundle to create a directory, to copy the Novell Client 2 Installation files on the client machine.
    For example: C:\ N_Client_2.
  • Select the Run as secure system user option for Executable Security Level.
  • Add a Delay action to the bundle with a value of 60 seconds.
  • Add an Install Directory action to the bundle, to copy the contents of the extracted Novell Client 2 setup directory:
  • Select the extracted Novell Client 2 setup directory as the Source Directory.
  • Select the directory created in Step 4 (C:\N_Client_2) as the Destination Directory.
  • Select the Run as secure system user option for Executable Security Level.
  • Select the Copy If Newer option, to enable copy options.
  • Add a Delay action to the bundle with the value of 60 seconds.
  • Add a Launch Executable action to the bundle.
  • Run the C:\N_Client_2\setup.exe command.
    Note: Change the path of the setup.exe file to reference the directory created in Step 4.
  • In the Advanced tab, select Run as secure system user option for Executable Security Level.
  • Apply the changes and publish the bundle.

1.2 Assigning a Bundle to Devices or Users

To assign a bundle to devices or users, perform the following steps:

  • In ZENworks Control Center, click the Bundles tab.
  • Select the bundle created in the Configuring the Novell Client 2 Installation Bundle section.
  • Assign a bundle to ZENworks Configuration Management devices (workstations/servers), device groups, device dynamic groups, device folders and users.

  • Assigning Existing Bundles to Devices

  • Refresh all the devices and users in the Management Zone.

1.3 Triggering the Novell Client 2 Install on Devices Using Bundle Quick Tasks

To trigger the Novell Client 2 Install on devices using Bundle Quick Tasks, perform the following steps:

  • In ZENworks Control Center, click the Bundles tab.
  • In the Bundles list, select the check box next to the bundle that was created in the section Configuring the Novell Client 2 Installation Bundle.
  • In the Bundle Tasks list in the left navigation pane, select Install Bundle.
  • In the Devices section, click Add to select the devices on which you want to install the bundle.
  • Select the devices and then click OK.

2 Installing Novell Client 2 on Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management

2.1 Configuring the Novell Client 2 Installation Bundle

To configure the Novell Client 2 Installation, perform the following steps:

  • Login to ZENworks Control Center.
  • Create a new Directive Bundle.
    For more information about creating Directive bundles, see Creating Directive Bundles in the Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management Software Distribution Reference.
  • In Actions > Install, add a few actions to the Directive Bundle.
    For more information about Bundle Actions, see Actions in the Novell ZENworks 10 Configuration Management Software Distribution Reference.
  • Add a Create/Delete Directory action to the bundle for creating a directory to copy the Novell Client 2 Installation files on the client machine.
    For example: C:\N_Client_2
  • In More Options, select the Run as secure system user or select the option for Executable Security Level.
  • Add a Delay action to the bundle with a value of 60 seconds.
  • Add an Install Directory action to the bundle to copy the contents of the extracted Novell Client 2 setup directory.
  • Select the extracted Novell Client 2 setup directory as the Source Directory.
  • Select the directory created in Step 4 (C:\N_Client_2) as the Destination Directory.
  • Under More Options, select the Run as secure system user option for Executable Security Level.
  • Select the Copy If Newer option, to enable copy options.
  • Add a Delay action to the bundle with a value of 60 seconds.
  • Add a Launch Executable action to the bundle.
  • Run the C:\N_Client_2\setup.exe command.
    Note:Change the path of the setup.exe file to reference the directory created in Step 4.
  • In Advanced tab, select the Run as secure system user option for Executable Security Level.
  • Apply the changes and publish the bundle.

2.2 Assigning a Bundle to Devices or Users

To assign a bundle to devices or users, perform the following steps:

  • In ZENworks Control Center, click the Bundles tab.
  • Select the bundle created in Configuring the Novell Client 2 Installation section.
  • Assign a bundle to ZENworks Configuration Management devices (workstations/servers), device groups, device dynamic groups, device folders and users.

  • Refresh all the devices and users in the Management Zone.

2.3 Triggering the Novell Client 2 Install on Devices

To trigger the Novel Client Install on devices, perform the following steps:

  • In ZENworks Control Center, click Bundles.
  • In the Bundles list, select the check box next to the bundle that was created in the section Configuring the Novell Client 2 Installation.
  • In the Bundle Tasks list in the left navigation pane, select Install Bundle.
  • In the Devices section, click Add to select the devices on which you want to install the bundle.
  • Select the devices and then click OK.

The Novell Client 2 setup file is customized in such a way that once installed, it prompts the user to reboot the machine. It is also customized to enable the LDAP Context Less login option. The Install.ini file in the Novell Client 2 setup directory can be edited before creating a bundle, to suppress the reboot prompt or to force a reboot after installation.
